It was a very dark time in my life–recently divorced, abusive rebound relationship, miserable at work, and depressed. One day my mom said to me, I want my daughter back! You are coming to yoga with me. That was my official introduction to Bikram yoga in the year of 2010.
During my first class, I thought what in the world is this yoga? I struggled with the heat. I struggled with listening to the instructions. I struggled with not knowing how to do the postures. And most of all, I struggled with being still.
After completing the first 60-day challenge, my life changed. I felt better as a person, was eating healthier, and my cholesterol was lower. I was happy with who I was becoming and with my health, but not happy with other areas of my life.
I had been an insurance agent for 19 years and found that with each passing day, I could not see myself in the insurance industry for another 19 years. In 2014, after vacationing to San Diego, California, I decided I would no longer work in corporate America. I quit my job, took a leap of faith and went to Thailand for the Bikram Yoga training in spring 2015.
I am a certified Bikram yoga instructor with Pure Yoga Texas and have had the pleasure of teaching at yoga retreats in Mexico and South Africa. I am also a professional singer and dog sitter. Yoga, singing, dog sitting – life is good!
One of the best things my mom did for me (besides giving me the gift of life) was introducing me to Bikram yoga. It has changed my life forever. When I enter the hot room and stand in the center of my mat, I know it’s “self care – self love”.
Here is what yoga means to me:
My rules to live by are: (1) Never give up on yourself; (2) Believe it and you will achieve it; and (3) You only have one life to live – enjoy it. Namaste
